Winter weather and deck furniture don't mix. You all know how bad winters can be here in Arlington, VA. Find out how you can plan ahead and nip Jack Frost before he nips you!

Metal Furniture

Metal furniture should be inspected for signs of rust before winter arrives. Should you notice rust, sand it away with heavy grit sandpaper or a metal file. Add a touch of primer to the area that was sanded, and then cover the entire piece with at least one coat of fresh paint. After doing this, you may want to add a thin coat of wax for even more protection.

Wood and Wicker Furniture

Wooden and wicker furniture can take an especially hard beating from snow and ice. If possible, store these pieces indoors during the winter months. If you don’t have ample storage space, some vinyl covers will provide a bit of protection for your pieces provided they fit snugly around them.

Even if you do cover your wooden pieces, it is still a good idea to paint them with a protective sealant. That way, you won’t have to worry about the rain damaging them when they are uncovered during the summer months. For best results, apply at least two coats of sealant in order to provide maximum protection.

Cushions

Cushions are the biggest worry when it comes to deck furniture in the elements. For more on how to protect your cushions from the elements:
